The ‘Transition Pathway for the Chemical Industry’ report outlines a roadmap for the EU chemical sector's green and digital transformation. As a key pillar of Europe’s economy, the industry faces challenges such as high carbon emissions, supply chain vulnerabilities, and global competition. The pathway provides strategic actions to enhance sustainability, accelerate digitalisation, and build resilience.
The roadmap includes three key components:
Action-oriented strategy: focuses on innovation collaboration, clean energy access, and feedstock diversification.
Technology roadmap: highlights electrification, hydrogen, biomass, waste processing, and carbon capture technologies.
Regulatory framework: aligns legislation with sustainability and innovation objectives.
The report emphasises investing in research, development, and infrastructure to drive the transition. Special attention is given to supporting SMEs in their digital and sustainable transformation. The strategy promotes fostering innovation, adopting circular business models, and upskilling the workforce, aligning with broader EU initiatives such as the European Green Deal and the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability.
By setting clear priorities, the roadmap ensures the chemical sector contributes to a climate-neutral and circular economy by 2050. This effort, driven by collaboration among industry stakeholders, EU Member States, and NGOs, positions the EU chemical industry as a global leader in sustainability and innovation.
