The EU automotive industry, the bloc's largest R&D investor at EUR 87 billion, grew investment by just 0.8%, well behind China (11.9%) and Japan (12.3%), while EU health sector R&D investment grew 13% and energy sector investment grew 19.8%, both outpacing global peers. Automotive is one of this ecosystem's biggest downstream customers for machinery and production equipment, so a stalling R&D budget there is a genuine early-warning signal for equipment orders, not just an automotive-sector statistic; conversely, the strength of energy-sector R&D points to where machinery suppliers serving that customer base may see more resilient demand. ICT, health, and automotive together account for over 80% of global R&D investment tracked by the Scoreboard, which covers the world's top 2,000 R&D investors and is used as a reference dataset by the Draghi and Heitor reports among others.
