A joint study by the Commission's Joint Research Centre and DG GROW, 'Strategic Insights into the EU's Advanced Manufacturing Industry', maps the global advanced manufacturing landscape by analysing industrial ecosystems - networks of interconnected firms sharing value chains and markets - rather than looking at individual sectors in isolation.

The study finds that electronics and energy-intensive industries dominate the global advanced manufacturing picture, and was designed specifically to help identify which industrial ecosystems still have untapped potential for EU policy to target. To make the underlying data easier to explore, the JRC has published an accompanying online tool alongside the written study, letting users browse the comparative data directly rather than relying only on the PDF report. A follow-up study is already underway, jointly prepared by the JRC and DG GROW, with findings expected by the end of 2026 - the platform will track its publication closely.
