SPRIND, Germany's federal agency for breakthrough innovation, has opened its "Next Frontier Robotics" challenge, backing teams developing multi-purpose robot platforms or novel hardware components for robots operating in unstructured, real-world environments. The challenge is open to eligible teams and companies from the EU, EFTA and the UK, not only German applicants, with applications open until 22 October 2026.

The challenge runs two tracks: Integrated Platforms, for teams building complete multi-purpose robots for complex commercial use cases, and Hardware Components, for novel gripping systems, sensors or joints achieving a step-change performance leap. Over four stages across 36 months, teams progress from lab testing to real-world deployment to interoperability with other teams' systems, with a focus on terrestrial, physically interactive applications in industrial, logistics, care and construction settings. SPRIND offers up to EUR 7.2 million per team as a fixed-price contract, plus venture development support, coaching and introductions to customers and investors, and may continue funding beyond the challenge where breakthrough potential is identified; teams are expected to incorporate a company aiming toward a self-sustaining business. Applications for either track are submitted directly through SPRIND's online portal (apply here), with a separate form required for each track if applying to both.
