FAMES focuses on Fully Depleted Silicon-on-Insulator (FD-SOI) technology, which lets chips run at significantly lower voltages, consuming 30-40% less power than conventional designs at equivalent performance. These ultra-low-power chips are specifically aimed at applications where power efficiency is critical - edge computing, industrial IoT devices, 5G/6G communications and automotive systems - all of which sit inside the sensors, controllers and connectivity modules embedded in modern connected machinery and robotics. The facility offers fair, non-discriminatory access to SMEs and start-ups alongside large industrial users, with a second Open Call in preparation for 2026, and more than 40 industrial partners already supporting it, including STMicroelectronics, Siemens and ASML.
