Factory-X, co-led by SAP and Siemens with 47 partners, extends the data-sovereignty principles proven in the automotive sector's Catena-X to mechanical engineering, aiming to connect data from the supply chain down to the shop floor.

Unlike Catena-X, which focused on horizontal supply-chain data exchange, Factory-X is designed to reach vertically into shop-floor processes, enabling use cases such as 'manufacturing as a service', where production companies could receive orders automatically through digital marketplaces matched to their available capacity, and economically viable production of individual, customised parts - a genuinely new way for smaller machinery manufacturers to fill spare capacity without chasing new customers themselves. The initiative sits alongside Chem-X and Semiconductor-X as further sector-specific extensions of the German-led Manufacturing-X framework, already published under this ecosystem's Industry initiatives content in an earlier batch.
