GROWT5 is a three-year Horizon Europe project with a budget of EUR 6 million and 14 European partners, which started in October 2026 and is coordinated by Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. It looks at how artificial intelligence, wearable sensors and collaborative robots can work together to improve safety in manufacturing tasks that put a heavy physical load on workers.

The project is built around the idea of human augmentation, which means technology that supports a worker’s physical and cognitive abilities instead of replacing the worker. It combines textile sensors integrated into work clothing, AI that recognises signs of fatigue, tactile alerts that help workers correct their movements, and collaborative robots that take over the heaviest tasks. The team in Rome works on shared communication and control between people and robots, so that operators can always understand what the robot is doing and why. The solutions are aimed at production steps that are physically demanding and depend on human experience and skill, and that are therefore hard to automate completely. Because the workforce doing these tasks is often ageing, the project offers manufacturers a practical way to reduce strain and the risk of injury while keeping people, and their traditional know-how, at the centre of the process.
