The EU-funded eBORDER project aims to develop a secure and wireless multimodal biometric scanning device for passenger verification at land and sea border control points. The project officially ended on 31 December 2024, contributing to the modernisation of EU border security.

The eBORDER project, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme, aimed to develop a secure, wireless, and multimodal biometric scanning device for passenger verification at land and sea borders, enhancing both security and traveller experience. Coordinated by the Instituto de Telecomunicações in Portugal, it focused on biometric technologies such as facial and fingerprint recognition, data fusion, and wireless security. Running from January 2020 to December 2024, it also served as a RISE training initiative to strengthen innovation and staff development through international collaboration. Key outcomes included the successful design of the eBORDER device and a passenger identification mechanism, contributing to more efficient and reliable border control systems.
