The European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism is an EU competition led by the European Commission, designed to acknowledge and reward smaller European destinations that have implemented effective strategies for boosting sustainable tourism through green transition efforts. Liepāja, Latvia, is one of the seven countries recognized for the 2025 competition. Known for its dedication to environmental preservation and inclusive tourism, Liepāja has implemented numerous eco-friendly initiatives, including an energy management system, an online energy consumption monitoring system, and programs to enhance energy efficiency in buildings. Furthermore, the city emphasizes inclusivity in tourism, providing accessible beach facilities and specialized routes for visitors with disabilities.
