For CO2-free production of hydrogen, BASF is pursuing two processes in parallel: the commercially available water electrolysis and methane pyrolysis. Implementation is planned by 2030. The methane pyrolysis technology for the CO2-free production of hydrogen from natural gas is supported with funding by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Methane pyrolysis is at an earlier stage in the project. In collaboration with Siemens Energy, BASF is investigating possibilities for the construction of a PEM (proton exchange membrane) water electrolysis system with a capacity of 54 megawatts for CO2-free production of hydrogen from water and electricity at the Ludwigshafen site. The project is in progress aiming for a start-up in 2025.
