The European Commission has completed its assessment of alleged biodiesel import fraud from China, reported by Germany in 2023. While the assessment identified weaknesses in certification audits, it did not confirm the existence of fraud, though it left the door open for further investigation by the German authorities.
In response, the Commission is strengthening safeguards against fraud in the biofuels market by reviewing sustainability certification rules, enhancing oversight of voluntary schemes, and planning the full mandatory roll-out of the EU biofuels traceability database. These measures aim to reinforce fraud prevention and ensure harmonised, credible certification processes across the EU, with key reforms expected by 2026.
