The Critical Chemicals Alliance has published its September update of the Import Trends Monitoring Tool, the mechanism it uses to detect anomalous increases in chemical and basic pharmaceutical imports against historical trends. For chemical producers concerned about import surges undercutting domestic production, monthly data of this kind is one of the more concrete, recurring outputs to have emerged from the Alliance since its launch.

The ITMT is one of four working areas the Alliance pursues, alongside establishing criteria to identify critical chemical productions and molecules, supporting Member State coordination on investment priorities, and enhanced trade monitoring under customs surveillance systems. Reports have been published monthly since July 2026, each accompanied by a downloadable dataset, giving companies, national authorities and trade negotiators a running record of import patterns rather than only periodic snapshots. The Alliance itself, chaired jointly with the Commission and open to companies, associations, investors, academia and civil society groups, held its first General Assembly in January 2026 at Chemelot in the Netherlands, and organises its technical work through four dedicated working groups covering critical molecules and production sites, trade, modernisation and investment, and lead markets.
