The European Commission has unveiled a comprehensive action plan to revitalise the struggling chemicals industry – often referred to as the 'mother of all industries' – as part of its wider industrial strategy. With production in decline and increasing challenges from global competition, high energy prices, and decarbonisation pressures, the plan offers targeted support structured around four key pillars:
- strengthening production through the creation of an Alliance for Critical Chemicals and the development of localised industrial hubs;
- reducing energy costs and supporting decarbonisation to address one of the sector’s most pressing challenges;
- boosting demand with 'made in Europe' incentives and the establishment of innovation hubs;
- simplifying regulations via a dedicated legislative package designed to reduce administrative burdens.
Commissioner Roswall highlighted the importance of maintaining high safety standards while ensuring global competitiveness. He emphasised the role of circularity, innovation, and the urgent need to phase out harmful PFAS chemicals. Developed in close cooperation with industry and social partners, the plan seeks to modernise the sector, protect 1.2 million jobs, reduce reliance on imports, and preserve Europe’s industrial and environmental leadership.
