The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Union and Austria have financed the renovation of 37 public buildings in Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The works, undertaken under a programme launched by the Canton of Sarajevo in 2020, focused on facilities such as schools, nurseries, student residences and healthcare centres. Financing was provided through an €8 million EBRD loan and a €2 million EU grant under the Regional Energy Efficiency Programme (REEP).
Interventions included improvements to building envelopes, windows, heating systems and lighting, with the aim of cutting energy consumption, lowering emissions and improving comfort. The article highlights the refurbishment of Donja Raštelica Primary School, a former railway building adapted for education use, as an example. The programme contributes to the city’s Green City Action Plan and has helped identify around 215 additional priority buildings in other cantons that could benefit from similar measures.
