On October 11, 2022, German Federal Ministers Dr. Volker Wissing and Klara Geywitz launched the Federal Government’s Building Information Modeling (BIM) Portal, aiming to accelerate the digital transformation of construction in Germany. The portal is designed to assist both public and private sectors in digitizing their construction projects, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and cost-effectiveness.

BIM facilitates coordinated data exchange among all stakeholders throughout the planning, construction, and operation phases. The portal offers free access to tools that support the creation of project and product data, enabling seamless sharing through open data formats. This initiative is part of Germany's broader strategy to digitalize planning processes for housing, transportation infrastructure, and waterways.

The BIM Portal also contributes to sustainability by allowing early-stage life cycle analyses and carbon footprint assessments of structures. It helps determine the potential for material reuse post-demolition, promoting resource efficiency. Additionally, the portal provides standardized templates, classifications, and Employer Information Requirements (EIR) to aid public clients and contractors in delivering quality-assured digital building models. Looking ahead, the portal plans to introduce tools for automated data monitoring in digital models starting in 2023.
