The conference, organised jointly with the European Commission, addressed the current housing crisis and explored measures that could be taken at EU level to tackle it. MEPs and representatives from the Commission and other EU institutions heard from national and regional authorities and stakeholders about what is being done in EU countries to improve access to affordable housing. The conference launched the public debate on affordable housing and its findings helped inform a Parliament report on the topic, expected to be presented later this year.
Moreover, the European Parliament established a Special Committee on the Housing Crisis in the European Union, with a 12-month mandate, to propose solutions for decent, sustainable, and affordable housing for all European citizens. It has been tasked with mapping housing needs, analysing existing housing policies across the EU, and contributing to the future implementation of the European affordable housing plan.
