The European Commission is addressing the escalating housing affordability crisis across Europe through a comprehensive strategy. This initiative focuses on enhancing the availability of affordable, sustainable and decent housing for all citizens.
Key actions include establishing a pan-European investment platform to mobilise public and private funds, doubling cohesion policy investments in affordable housing and revising state aid rules to facilitate Member States' support for affordable housing projects. The Commission also aims to develop a European Strategy for Housing Construction to bolster housing supply and assist cities and regions in optimising the use of vacant and underutilised buildings. Addressing systemic issues such as short-term accommodation rentals and housing speculation is also a priority.
As a first step, the Commission has launched the Affordable Housing Dialogue, a consultative process engaging stakeholders across Member States. Following this, a public consultation has been launched to collect views from the general public and experts on possible policy solutions. Insights gathered through the dialogue and the consultation will feed into the preparation of the European Affordable Housing Plan. The initiative is supported by Dan Jørgensen, the EU's first Commissioner for Housing, and a dedicated Housing Task Force that will coordinate efforts across the EU.
