The construction sector in Spain faces the challenge of decarbonising its activities to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, in line with the European Green Deal. Currently, buildings account for 40 % of energy consumption, and construction generates 30 % of waste in the EU. The Spanish AECO sector, traditionally conservative, must overcome obstacles such as generational replacement gaps, a shortage of qualified workers, and resistance to change.

Digitalisation and the adoption of technologies such as building information modelling (BIM), Internet of Things (IoT), drones, augmented reality, and AI are essential to improve the sector’s efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness. However, business fragmentation and lack of digital skills hinder this transformation. Initiatives like Construction 4.0 and strategic projects such as PERTE for industrialisation aim to modernise the sector, promoting collaboration between administrations, companies, and research centres.

Investment in continuous training and worker awareness are key to enabling the sector to adopt emerging technologies and sustainable practices, facilitating its transition toward a circular and digital economy.
