A new LIFE Programme publication launched on 6 May 2026 demonstrates how environmental and climate action contributes to the three pillars of the EU Competitiveness Compass - innovation, strategic autonomy and resilience. Several featured initiatives directly intersect with the construction ecosystem, covering building renovation finance, urban green infrastructure and industrial decarbonisation.

CINEA has released LIFE and the EU's Competitiveness Agenda: Fostering innovation, strategic autonomy, and resilience for sustainable growth, a new publication presenting initiatives from different EU countries that translate climate and environmental action into measurable economic benefits. The LIFE Programme, with €5.4 billion allocated for 2021-2027 and over €4 billion already mobilised since 2014, serves as a leverage instrument attracting both public and private financing in support of the EU Competitiveness Compass.
Several featured projects are particularly relevant to the construction ecosystem. DeliverEEM is expanding energy-efficient mortgage schemes across Europe, channelling private capital towards the renovation of buildings. LIFE TreeCheck applies green infrastructure in cities to counter the urban heat island effect and improve climate resilience in dense built-up areas. EXQUISHEAT, in turn, advances industrial-scale heat pump applications that help cut reliance on fossil fuels.
Together, these examples illustrate how environmental ambition can translate into competitive advantage - strengthening EU value chains, opening new market opportunities and accelerating the green transition in sectors closely tied to construction.
