On 28 July 2026, excavation teams completed the final breakthrough of the eastern and western main tunnel tubes of the Brenner Base Tunnel, creating 1,400 metres of continuous cross-border rail connections between Austria's H53 Pfons-Brenner section with Italy's H61 Mules 2-3 section.
The project combined different excavation methods, with tunnel boring machines used on the Italian side and drill-and-blast excavation used on the Austrian side. According to information retrieved from the project, around 220 km of the planned 230 km tunnel network had been excavated by July 2026. Once completed, the tunnel will form part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T Corridor, supporting rail connections between northern and southern Europe.
