In June 2026, the Tangenziale di Napoli became Italy's first road to receive Smart Road certification. According to project insigts, the road incorporates traffic monitoring systems, digital traffic management technologies and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication capabilities.
The project forms part of Italy's Smart Road programme and includes infrastructure designed to collect and exchange traffic and road operation data. The certification was awarded following the deployment of the required digital and communication systems.
