The smart building sector in Italy is a key opportunity for employment and sustainability. It currently generates EUR 174 billion in revenue and employs 515 000 workers. According to the Smart Building Community of The European House – Ambrosetti, there is potential to create 200 000 additional skilled jobs, including engineers, designers, installers, and specialised technicians.

However, companies face challenges finding professionals with green and smart skills. Around 83.7 % of open positions require these skills, yet 57.6 % go unfilled due to a lack of qualified candidates. The workforce is ageing and often lacks higher education, highlighting the need to strengthen training in schools and ITS Academies.

Italy’s building stock is largely outdated and needs upgrades to meet the requirements of the EU’s Green Homes Directive, improving energy efficiency and reducing CO₂ emissions. The expansion of smart buildings offers environmental, economic, and social benefits and can be a catalyst for creating high-quality jobs in the construction sector.

To meet these challenges, Italy must invest in upskilling and reskilling, enhance education pathways, and foster public-private collaboration. Only by closing the skills gap can the country fully support the transition to a smarter and greener built environment.
