In 2022, Portugal’s overall net bed occupancy rate was 45.7%. The autonomous region of Madeira had the highest rate at 61.5%. When considering different accommodation types, hotels stood out with a significantly higher occupancy rate (50.8%) compared to local accommodations (36.9%) and rural establishments (27.7%). In contrast, the national net bed occupancy rate in 2019 was slightly higher at 47.3%, driven by better hotel occupancy. However, local accommodations and rural tourism facilities had lower occupancy rates in 2019 than in 2022, indicating a growing preference for rural accommodations. Statistics Portugal provides more data through its publicly available database, which allows exploration of bed occupancy rates in tourist accommodation establishments by geographic location in Portugal.
