In May 2020, Eurostat published an article providing background information on summer tourism patterns in the European Union, which could help quantify the potential impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the tourism economy. The article highlights that in July and August 2018, EU residents made 270 million trips (23.9% of the entire year), resulting in 1.9 billion overnight stays and EUR 138 billion in spending. The highest number of summer trips in July and August were made by residents of France (53 million trips, including 40 million domestic trips), Germany (48 million trips, including 25 million domestic trips), and Spain (39 million trips, including 34 million domestic trips). For more details on tourism trips, nights, and expenditure trends in the EU before COVID-19, follow the attached link to the Eurostat article.
