According to the data from the Eurostat, the surface of terrestrial protected areas has been expanding across the EU. The most significant increases in protected areas have been observed in Spain and France. . These protected areas include both nationally designated sites and Natura 2000 sites, which aim to maintain or restore a favorable conservation status for habitat types and species of EU interest.
