In 2022, nearly half (47%) of the total tourism spending by EU travelers was on domestic trips. All EU destinations (including domestic ones) contributed to 82% of the total expenditure, while destinations outside the EU made up the remaining 18%. According to Eurostat, the total tourist expenditure in the EU for 2022 reached EUR 476 billion, representing a significant increase of 65% compared to 2021. Remarkably, this amount was nearly equivalent to the pre-Covid level in 2019. A breakdown of the 2022 expenditure reveals that EUR 134 billion (28% of the total) was spent on transport, while a slightly higher amount, EUR 168 billion (35% of the total), was spent on accommodation.
