The European Commission has launched the testing phase of the EU Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) in Italy, an initiative designed to assess and promote the smart capabilities of buildings. The SRI measures how effectively a building can: adapt to the needs of occupants; optimise energy efficiency; and interact with the energy grid. This tool supports the EU’s goals under the Green Deal and the Renovation Wave, helping accelerate the decarbonisation of buildings across Europe.

Italy is among the first countries to implement the test phase, involving a broad range of stakeholders including public authorities, industry representatives, and experts in building technologies. The pilot will evaluate how the SRI can be practically applied in real building contexts and how it aligns with national energy performance strategies.

The SRI is expected to encourage innovation in smart technologies, improve building performance, and empower consumers by providing accessible information about the smart readiness of their buildings. The findings from Italy’s pilot phase will contribute to refining the SRI methodology and support a broader EU-wide rollout, making buildings more energy-efficient, responsive, and future-ready.
