The ‘Net zero game changer’ report, a collaboration between EuroCommerce and Oliver Wyman, explores the critical role of the European retail and wholesale sector in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Representing a significant portion of Europe's emissions – 1.6 gigatonnes of CO2e annually – the sector faces the challenge of tackling Scope 3 emissions, which constitute 98 % of its total carbon footprint. These emissions originate primarily from complex global supply chains and consumer product use.
The study provides a comprehensive overview of the sector’s current status, regulatory frameworks, and a path towards a decarbonised future, focusing on key subsectors like food and beverage, health and beauty, textiles, consumer electronics, and home DIY. By addressing the need for standardisation, transparency, and innovation, the report offers actionable strategies to align decarbonisation efforts with EU targets of reducing emissions by 55 % by 2030. It calls for collective action involving stakeholders across the value chain, policymakers, and consumers to accelerate the sector’s progress towards achieving net zero.
