BASF intends to diversify its material basis and to mitigate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by purchased feedstocks. In 2022, BASF purchased around 1.2 million metric tons of renewable raw materials based on vegetable oils, fats, grains, sugar, and wood. We commit to sourcing biomass sustainably based on environmental and social sourcing principles, standards, and regulations. We continuously develop and adapt our sourcing criteria further to ensure the purchase of sustainably grown biomass, which does not negatively impact local food systems and ecosystems. In 2022, we met our own voluntary commitment to source only RSPO-certified palm oil and palm kernel oil (~200kt) which corresponds to ~300kt CO2 emissions avoided. Today, 25 BASF sites are certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Today BASF offers a diversified portfolio of sustainably sourced and certified bio-based portfolio, e.g. from palm, coconut and castor oils. We strive to procure the main derivatives based on palm oil and palm kernel oil entirely from certified sustainable sources by 2025. In this regard we work closely with our cooperation partners such as Cargill, P&G, GIZ and others.
