The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) started as a small initiative at the World Economic forum in 2017 and matured into independence in 2022. BASF was one of the founders of the GBA (globalbattery.org). Meanwhile, GBA brings together more than 150 industry, civil society, and government institutions with the common aim to build a sustainable and responsible battery circular economy. BASF supports this mission by contributing at all levels of the GBA organization as well as serving in GBA’s governance bodies. GBA’s Battery Passport (BP) program is the key enabler to achieve the objectives by creating a comprehensive digital reporting instrument of relevant ESG issues along the battery lifecycle. The transparency obtained will allow steering of commercial activities, consequently, leading to the desired improvements especially lowering carbon footprint and respecting social issues. BASF had contributed to the BP program by having had delegated a full-time project manager for 3 years to conceptualize and lead the Battery Passport program as well as many expert contributions. .

Furthermore, the Battery Pass project (batterypass.eu) co-funded by the German Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection complements the GBA activities as it elaborates the foundations of the implementation of a battery passport in the EU based on the EU Batter Regulation. BASF contributes to the various work packages and facilitates the connection between the Battery Pass project and the GBA. These initiatives synergistically support the digitization of supply chain information to enable a low carbon circular economy in the emerging battery sector.
