At BASF, we operate 239 production sites worldwide, six of them are Verbund sites. The Verbund concept links and steers plants intelligently to create efficient value chains – from basic chemicals to high value-added solutions such as coatings or crop protection products – and manage production in a resource-efficient and carbon-optimized way. By-products from one facility are used as feedstocks elsewhere. This saves raw materials and energy, avoids emissions, lowers logistics cost, and leverages synergies.
The Verbund is evolving further: Ludwigshafen is to become climate neutral as early as 2045. With new technologies, concepts, and processes, we will gradually complete the transformation in Ludwigshafen from a fossil to a renewable energy supply and raw material base. Future energy sources will be wind and solar plants and climate-neutral hydrogen to increase flexibility. Fossil raw materials will be largely replaced by renewable, biogenic or recycled raw materials. The first electrolyzer for CO2-free hydrogen is expected to operate by 2025.
