In this project near the Bondalti Estarreja sites (Portugal), we aim to use renewable electricity for generating steam that will be consumed for the production of chemicals. Bondalti will carry out investments associated with the renovation and expansion of an electrical substation and the replacement of the current system for producing steam from an existing boiler – which burns natural gas – with an electric boiler. With this project, Bondalti forecasts an annual reduction in its consumption of natural gas of around 257,731 GJ, which will allow for an annual reduction in its scope 1 emissions of around 14,536 t CO2e. The reduction in natural gas consumption will be offset by the consumption of electricity from renewable sources, thus forecasting an annual electricity consumption of 68,328 MWh, which corresponds to scope 2 GHG emissions of around 1,774 tCO2e. Thus, the final balance of GHG emissions avoided with this project is 12,762 tCO2e. Contributing to these calculations is the fact that Bondalti has outlined the objective of, by 2026, 90% of the electricity consumed in the Estarreja complex to come from renewable sources. In summary, Bondalti aims to achieve a total reduction of GHG emissions of 27.5% (54.2% of these correspond to scope 1 emissions and 20.4% correspond to scope 2 emissions) compared to 2019 levels. The execution of the construction works is expected to start during Q1 2024 and to be concluded and licenced in the Q4 2025.
