Clariant launched in 2022 its automated product carbon footprint (PCF) calculator to provide customers with credible PCFs for their products. The CliMate tool uses primary operational data from Clariant sites, along with emission factors based on supplier data and industry average databases. The recent updates in the ecoinvent database—which is the base for many Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs)—include new data that impacts the carbon footprint calculations of fossil-based products, particularly for crude oil, natural gas, and their resulting products. Therefore, these latest changes in emission factors are now reflected in Clariant’s CliMate tool to provide the most up-to-date carbon footprint coverage of our portfolio to both our customers and internal decision-makers. For more information on the Clariant approach to Carbon Footprints and Clariant's CliMate tool: https://www.clariant.com/en/Sustainability/Environmental/Product-Carbon-Footprint-Calculations. By the end of 2024, Clariant will cover approx. 75% of its active portfolio (in sales volumes) with automated PCF’s. In 2025, Clariant will upgrade the CliMate tool to respond to the increasing requirements of the Together for Sustainability guideline for PCF’s in the chemical industry (e.g. further transparency on biogenic emissions).
