Fertilizers Europe is currently developing an ammonia certification scheme to declare its carbon footprint The objective of the scheme is to have a transparent carbon footprint for ammonia products, which will soon be a requirement, and in doing so establish viable business cases and a certification system that enables the development of a green/low-carbon ammonia market. With the creation of a market for green/low-carbon products the scheme contributes to the twin transition. One of the milestones will be completed by end of October 2023 by undertaking audits of the two pilot projects. In 2024, pilot audits of non-European plants will take place and the review of the European pilot plant audits will take place. In this way we can test the robustness of the scheme and how it aligns with EU policy for both Member States and third countries. Future expansion of the scheme to include ammonia-based fertilizer products is planned.
