Title of the initiative: Transport Insights 2023. This initiative is directly linked to the implementation of topic 20: “Sustainable transport of raw materials and chemical products”. Cefic’s “Transport Insights 2023” is a tool based on a study of the environmental and societal impact of the European Chemical Industry transport. The objective of such tool is to:
• Provide transparency to Member States, national associations and companies on the current multimodal performance of chemicals transport;
• Create awareness of the external impact, such as GHG emissions and external costs, of chemicals transport;
• Support transport strategy management and decision making, by simulating GHG emissions and external costs savings of modal shift to rail and inland waterways;
• Support policy makers & national bodies, the infrastructure managers, in understanding modal shift potential in their country.
It features freight transport patterns, modal spit trends, road freight by distance, costs and GHG of freight transport. Also, it assesses a list of KPIs by country that offer clear key findings and modal shifts scenarios. It was developed during the first month of 2023 by developing in integrated dashboard, connecting:
• Eurostat data, which offers up-to-date figures directly from the statistical office of the European Union;
• The latest version of the Commission’s Handbook of external costs of transport;
• Module 5 of the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) framework.
The tool was launched in May 2023.
