The construction sector is at the heart of Europe’s transition towards a circular economy. As one of the largest waste-generating industries, it has both the responsibility and the potential to transform waste management practices into a model of sustainability. The European Union has been actively shaping this transformation through its Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) Management Protocol, which sets out principles and recommendations to ensure the effective recovery and reuse of materials while reducing environmental impact.
The last version of the ‘EU construction and demolition waste management protocol’, published in 2024, follows the first publication (2018) with the aim of bringing the document in line with recent policy and technological developments.
