The OECD published a working paper on 20 December 2024, providing insights into the economic impacts of international tourism using expenditure measures of non-residents estimated within the framework of the OECD’s Inter-Country Input-Output (ICIO) tables. The ICIO framework helps capture both the direct and indirect value added from international tourism, which are not easily measurable in national statistics. The findings reveal that although most value added is generated by domestic industries directly serving tourists (such as hotels and restaurants), approximately 28% of the value added from tourism activities is generated indirectly within the domestic economy, and around 17% is generated abroad.
