The European Commission's September 2023 publication provides a comprehensive analysis of travel habits and expectations within and outside the Schengen area. It covers reasons for travel, frequency of trips, and issues encountered during travel, emphasizing the importance of EU policy actions and Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs) in facilitating smoother travel experiences. This report highlights the cooperation needed between the EU and its member states to ensure border security and enhance travel facilitation across Europe.

The survey highlights that Europeans place a strong emphasis on both improved border security and more efficient border procedures. A significant portion of the population, 68%, supports the use of digital travel documents when traveling to or outside the Schengen Area. Furthermore, 66% of Europeans favor a unified digital travel document application at the EU level, which would simplify travel across Member States. In contrast, only 23% would prefer having a separate application for each Member State, to be downloaded based on the country they are traveling to or from.
