The Sustainable Mobility Index 2024, published by the Western Development Commission in April 2025, evaluates transport progress across 40 rural towns in Ireland’s Western Region. The index uses 30 indicators across three themes - low-carbon readiness, access to services, and access to employment - to assess mobility performance. It highlights both improvements in public transport and ongoing challenges in active travel infrastructure and affordability. Towns like Westport, Claremorris, and Ballyhaunis showed notable progress, while the findings underscore the need for targeted investment to support sustainable and inclusive rural mobility.
