Scientists warn that Earth has only five years left to avoid a critical climate change milestone: a 1.5-degree Celsius increase compared to pre-industrial times. This warming threshold, crucial for mitigating climate impacts, was highlighted in the 2015 Paris Agreement. However, a recent study published in Nature Climate Change reveals that this goal will be unavoidable by early 2029 if global emissions from fossil fuels continue at their current rate. The remaining carbon budget for 1.5 degrees has significantly diminished, emphasizing the urgency of emissions reduction efforts.
