The European Council issued Directive 2015/637 in April of 2015. This regulation lays out procedures for collaboration and coordination in order to enable consular protection for unrepresented EU persons travelling to third countries. It makes sure that people of the EU who are in trouble have the right to use the embassies or consulates of other EU nations for protection when their own is not represented. The fundamental right of EU citizens to consular protection is reinforced by this regulation, which also improves legal certainty, effective coordination, and solidarity among consular authorities.
