The EU aligned rules on textile labelling with Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 on fibre names and related labelling and marking of the fibre composition of textile products, commonly referred to as the Textile Labelling Regulation. This was done to protect consumer interests and eliminate potential obstacles to the proper functioning of the internal market.

The textile fibre names and labelling regulation, known as Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011, focuses on textile fibre names and related labelling and marking of the fibre composition of textile products.
In particular this regulation aims to improve the functioning of the internal market and provide accurate information to consumers by:
• Harmonising fibre names: Establish a uniform system for naming textile fibres, ensuring consistency across all EU member states.
• Requiring labelling: Mandate detailed labelling of textile products, notably regarding the exact fibre composition, to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions.
• Promote transparency: Increase transparency in the textile market, allowing consumers to compare products more easily and fostering fair competition among manufacturers.
Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 represents a significant step forward in standardising textile labelling and ensuring consumer protection within the European Union. By providing clear and accurate information about textile products, this regulation benefits both consumers and manufacturers, fostering a more transparent and competitive market. Textile stakeholders should familiarise themselves with the requirements of this regulation to ensure compliance and take advantage of the opportunities it presents.
For more detailed information, you can access the webpage of the Regulation here and the full text of the regulation here.
The European Commission is currently planning a fundamental revision of the Regulation – see more details here.
