Ageing presents significant social and economic challenges, requiring innovative solutions that promote active and healthy lifestyles for older individuals. The "Social Innovation for Active and Healthy Ageing" initiative, launched by the King Baudouin Foundation alongside Fundación La Caixa, Erste Stiftung, and Fundazione UniCredit, sought to address these challenges by supporting new approaches to ageing. The project combined social innovation with active ageing principles, identifying best practices across Europe that enhance well-being, participation, and dignity for older people.

A central component of the initiative was the European Award for Social Innovation in Ageing, which recognised outstanding projects tackling ageing-related issues. The selection process included case study collection, analysis, and dissemination, ultimately identifying 20 exemplary initiatives. These projects spanned various domains, from policy and business strategies to local community efforts, demonstrating scalable solutions for ageing populations.

One key aspect of the initiative was its emphasis on social entrepreneurship and collaborative governance. By involving diverse stakeholders, including NGOs, research institutions, and local governments, the programme fostered a network of knowledge exchange and cooperation. The case studies showcased the importance of participatory models, where older people play an active role in shaping their living environments and social policies.

The findings of the initiative underscored the importance of integrating ageing strategies into broader social and economic policies. It highlighted the potential for social innovation to drive systemic change, encouraging policymakers and practitioners to adopt more inclusive and sustainable approaches. By facilitating dialogue, investment, and practical implementation, the project contributed to the development of resilient, age-friendly societies across Europe.
