On 11 February 2025, the European Commission presented its 2025 work programme titled Moving forward together: A Bolder, Simpler, Faster Union. This strategic plan outlines key initiatives to address pressing challenges and enhance the Union's effectiveness.

Key priorities:

  1. Strengthening security: in response to geopolitical instability and ongoing conflicts, notably Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the Commission emphasises strengthening Europe's security framework. This includes measures to manage migration effectively and protect democratic values from foreign interference.
  2. Enhancing competitiveness: recognising economic challenges such as unfair competition, high energy costs, and labour shortages, the programme proposes removing structural barriers to boost the EU's competitiveness. Efforts will focus on supporting businesses and achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
  3. Climate action: the Commission underscores the urgency of addressing climate change, citing recent extreme weather events across Europe. Initiatives aim to strengthen food and energy security, protect the natural environment, and promote sustainable practices.

Simplification and unity:

The programme promotes more accessible and effective EU rules for citizens and businesses. It stresses the importance of unity among Member States to tackle common challenges and seize collective opportunities.

Future outlook:

The Commission plans to boost investment in priority areas and prepare for potential EU enlargement, supporting candidate countries in their accession processes. The overarching goal is to ensure that Europe remains secure, competitive, and resilient in the face of evolving global dynamics.
