On 4 November, during the hearing of Commissioner-designate for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas pledged to continue promoting sustainable urban mobility. He highlighted the significant time drivers spend in traffic and emphasised the role of clean public transport in reclaiming this time and reducing emissions. This commitment was welcomed, but city leaders are eager to see these promises translated into concrete actions.

The following day, on 5 November in Barcelona, city leaders and associations gathered to reaffirm their dedication to sustainable, accessible, and resilient public transport systems. They called for increased investments at the European level to support these initiatives. During this event, 10 among city leaders and associations signed the European Declaration for Sustainable and Attractive Public Transport in Cities. These are the cities of Barcelona, Tallin, Porto, Milan, Rome, Braga, Utrecht, Vienna and Madrid, as well as the European Union Committee (EUC).

The declaration signed in Barcelona emphasises the need for sustainable, resilient, and inclusive public transport systems. It calls for collaboration with various government levels to make public transportation a high-quality option for the majority, seamless multimodal integration, affordability, climate adaptation, and addressing staff shortages.

The signatories also call on European and national policymakers to support the sector's transition to zero-emission mobility, unlock new funding streams, and ensure public transport remains a key element in urban mobility strategies. Together, they aim to position Europe’s cities as leaders in sustainable urban mobility, setting a global benchmark for accessible, innovative, and eco-friendly public transport.
