Our continuous actions to improve the SUSTAINABILITY of business travel are, on the one hand, the stakeholder interaction at the local level to request the disclosure of the CO2 emissions of travel services at the point of sale, but also to emphasize at the European level the high importance of the CO2 footprint, which must become equally important as price. Travel buyers currently must often pay for their CO2 reports, which demonstrates that this data is not yet accessible for all, which is key for any improvements in sustainability.
The main aim is to achieve a common framework for CO2 emissions calculations, to enable comparison of travel services and to make the sustainability related improvement of travel services visible, and therefore support the early adoption of the CountEmissions EU proposal by the End of the year 2024.
We have already produced a Position Paper in 2023, ‘Sustainability in Business Travel’ and will review, update and publish this in 2024, which will assess progress on the above sustainability issues. We have already organised two webinars with MEPs, which touched on many of these issues, and will organise a third by the year end.
We will meet key stakeholders in the EU regularly, have already organised a day of engagement in 2024, will hold at least two further days of engagement by the end of the year, with a special focus on new and re-elected MEPs and the new Commissioners and Cabinets.
We will focus on promoting the early adoption of CountEmissions EU by the end of 2024, and in 2025 promote a wide review by year end to, for example to evaluate bringing the entire eco-system into scope, include Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) and accommodation.
We are producing a White Paper on the Transformation Pathway for Sustainable Business Travel by the end of 2024, to offer guidance, foster and share best practice for the entire business travel eco-system. Progress will be reviewed once a year, guidance and best practice updated, and a refreshed White Paper published annually.
In reducing GHG emissions caused by business travel, this industry sector also needs clear and actionable data on the level, structure and development of GHG emissions. This data is not available today. We commit to build an industry-wide coalition to fund a data project or connect to Data Space for Tourism which will bring transparency into the emissions caused by business travel.
