Health and safety count as our top priorities. So we are supporting Actions for a more RESILIENT TOURISM.
In our commitment to promoting resilient tourism strategies, we are actively engaged in various initiatives to prioritize health and safety in business travel. To concretely support this, we have already taken significant steps:
We have produced a Position Paper in 2023, titled 'Boosting the Economic Impact of Business Travel,' which we will thoroughly review, update, and publish in 2024. This updated document will specifically evaluate progress made on enhancing resilience within the tourism sector.
We have conducted two informative webinars with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), addressing key issues surrounding business travel resilience. A third webinar is planned by the year's end to continue these discussions.
Regular meetings with key stakeholders in the EU have been organized, including a dedicated engagement day in 2024. Additionally, we commit to scheduling at least two more engagement days by year-end, with a special emphasis on engaging new and re-elected MEPs, as well as the newly appointed Commissioners and Cabinets.
Our efforts are aimed at better addressing the needs of business travellers by advocating for uniform rules and a new legislative framework to facilitate cross-border work and job rotation. Furthermore, we are actively supporting the development of a coherent and resilient framework for business travel, in alignment with recommendations from the European Court of Auditors.
We pledge to continue advocating for the protection of passengers' rights and ensuring a level playing field across all modes of transportation on ticketing and pricing. Through these actions, we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to fostering a more resilient tourism sector in Europe.
The initial reaction to the pandemic, in terms of uncertainty and travel restrictions, with its consequential impact on corporate travel, including cancelled events and meetings on a mass and unprecedented scale resulted in significant losses in business for all suppliers in the travel industry, corporates in general and the wider economy.
The pandemic demonstrated how vulnerable business travel in particular, and our economy in general, were to a global health crisis, and how inter-connected the world of business travel, our societies and our economies have become.
In response to the significant impact of the pandemic on corporate travel and its broader economic ramifications, we recognize the urgent need for proactive measures to enhance the resilience of business travel within the European Union.
Our concrete actions to advocate for these measures include:
Publication and Review: We have produced a Position Paper titled 'Boosting the Economic Impact of Business Travel' in 2023, with plans to review, update, and publish it in 2024. This updated paper will comprehensively assess progress made on enhancing resilience within the business travel sector.
Engagement Through Webinars: We have conducted two informative webinars with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), addressing key issues related to business travel resilience. A third webinar is scheduled to take place by the end of the year, continuing our dialogue on these critical matters.
Stakeholder Meetings: We are committed to engaging with key stakeholders in the EU on a regular basis. Already, we have organized a day of engagement in 2024, with plans for at least two additional engagement days by year-end. These engagements will include focused discussions with new and re-elected MEPs, as well as the newly appointed Commissioners and Cabinets.
By taking these concrete actions, we seek to highlight the importance of addressing the vulnerabilities exposed by the pandemic in business travel and advocate for measures to strengthen the resilience of the sector.
We call for the following actions to be taken by the EU:
- Better address the needs of business travelers and work proactively to adopt uniform rules and develop a new legislative framework to allow easier cross-border work and job rotation. This would answer to the ongoing shifts in working patterns.
- Better prepare for potential future emergencies. Make sure that there is a coherent and resilient framework for business travel. We support the view of the European Court of Auditors (ECA), who recommend the need to streamline communication and to strengthen the consistent uptake of tools provided in all member states.
- Better protect passengers, with end-to-end passenger rights.
- Better enforce a level playing field across all modes of transportation on ticketing and pricing.
