As one of the leading consumer goods companies in the world, with a large Foods & Refreshment portfolio, we want to drive systemic change through our scale and reach and be a force for good. We therefore want to play an important part in the EU Code of Conduct for Responsible Business and Marketing Practices. Our objective is to make sustainable living commonplace, by driving a progressive agenda on issues like climate and social inequality, while continuing to serve our consumers through our purposeful brands, which are more relevant than ever.

Commitments by aspirational objectives:

Aspirational objective 1: Healthy, balanced, and sustainable diets for all European consumers, thereby contributing to: 

1) Reversing malnutrition and diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the EU; 

2) Reducing the environmental footprint of food consumption by 2030.

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Improved food consumption patterns in the EU;

b) A food environment that makes it easier to choose healthy and sustainable diets

Unilever commitments:

• Doubling the number of products delivering positive nutrition globally by 2025 – defined as products containing impactful amounts of vegetables, fruits, proteins, or micronutrients like vitamins, zinc, iron, and iodine;
• Continuing lowering calorie, salt, and sugar levels across products;

• Reaching an annual global sales target of €1 billion from plant-based meat and dairy alternatives, by 2025-2027.

 

Aspirational objective 2: Prevention and reduction of food loss and waste (at the consumer level, within internal operations, and across value chains)

With the following aspirational target: 

A 50% reduction of per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030 and reduced food losses along the food production and supply chains in the EU.

Unilever commitments:

• Halving food waste in our direct global operations by 2025 – five years earlier than previously committed, as part of the Champions 12.3 coalition target.

 

Aspirational objective 3: A climate-neutral food chain in Europe by 2050

With the following aspirational target: 

Reducing net emissions from own operations, contributing to a 55% GHG emission reduction target in the EU food chain by 2030 (following a science-based approach).

Unilever commitments:

• Achieving net-zero emissions for all Unilever products from sourcing to point of sale by 2039.

 

Aspirational objective 4: An optimised circular and resource-efficient food chain in Europe

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Improved resource efficiency within own operations, contributing to sustainable, efficient use and management of energy and natural resources in operations by 2030; 

b) Improved sustainability of food and drink packaging, striving for all packaging towards circularity by 2030.

Unilever commitments:

• 100% of plastic packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025;

• Halving our use of virgin plastic by 2025 by reducing plastic packaging by more than 100,000 tonnes and increasing the use of recycled plastic.

 

Aspirational objective 5: Sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Improved resilience and competitiveness of companies operating at any point along the food value chain by 2030;

b) Quality jobs, skilled workforce, and safe and inclusive workplaces for all.

Unilever commitments:

• Ensuring that everyone who directly provides goods and services to the company earns at least a living wage or income, by 2030;
• Helping 5 million small and medium-sized enterprises grow their business by 2025;
• Spending €2 billion annually with diverse businesses worldwide by 2025;
• Pioneering new employment models for Unilever employees by 2030, reskilling and upskilling our employees with future-fit skills by 2025, and equipping 10m young people with essential skills by 2030.

 

Aspirational objective 6: Sustainable value creation in the European food supply chain through partnership

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Improved resilience and competitiveness of companies operating at any point along the food value chain by 2030;

b) Continued progress towards sustainable production, contributing to sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources by 2030 and improved animal welfare.

Unilever commitments:

• Reaching an annual global sales target of €1 billion from plant-based meat and dairy alternatives, by 2025-2027.

 

Aspirational objective 6: Sustainable value creation in the European food supply chain through partnership

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Improved resilience and competitiveness of companies operating at any point along the food value chain by 2030;

b) Continued progress towards sustainable production, contributing to sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources by 2030 and improved animal welfare.

Unilever commitments:

• Protect and regenerate 1.5M hectares of land, forests, and oceans by 2030.

 

Aspirational objective 7: Sustainable sourcing in food supply chains

With the following aspirational targets:

a) Transformed commodity supply chains that do not contribute to deforestation, forest degradation, and destruction of natural habitat and which preserve and protect high-value ecosystems and biodiversity;

b) Improved social performance in (global) food supply chains.

Unilever commitments:
• Achieving a deforestation-free supply chain in palm oil, paper, and board, tea, soy, and cocoa by 2023.
