Since the creation of Sodexo, our mission has been to improve the quality of life of our employees and those we serve and to contribute to the economic, social and environmental development of the communities, regions and countries in which we operate.
We make sure that our approach to enhancing people’s quality of life embodies principles of diversity, sustainability, environmental awareness, local prosperity and respect for every kind of resource we work with.
The endorsement of the Code of conduct for responsible business and marketing practices will foster the deployment of the Better Tomorrow strategy and accelerate the achievements of the following objectives. It acknowledges the role of Sodexo as major actor of the transition toward a sustainable food system.
Commitments by aspirational objectives:
Aspirational objective 1: Healthy, balanced, and sustainable diets for all European consumers, thereby contributing to:
1) Reversing malnutrition and diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the EU;
2) Reducing the environmental footprint of food consumption by 2030.
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Improved food consumption patterns in the EU;
b) A food environment that makes it easier to choose healthy and sustainable diets.
Sodexo commitments:
• 100% Consumers with healthy lifestyle options.
Aspirational objective 2: Prevention and reduction of food loss and waste (at the consumer level, within internal operations, and across value chains)
With the following aspirational target:
A 50% reduction of per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030 and reduced food losses along the food production and supply chains in the EU.
Sodexo commitments:
• 50% reduction in our food waste.
Aspirational objective 3: A climate-neutral food chain in Europe by 2050
With the following aspirational target:
Reducing net emissions from own operations, contributing to a 55% GHG emission reduction target in the EU food chain by 2030 (following a science-based approach).
Sodexo commitments:
• 34% of GHG Emissions compared to 2017 (with approval from the ScienceBased Target initiative);
• 100% renewable electricity in our direct operations.
Aspirational objective 4: An optimised circular and resource-efficient food chain in Europe
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Improved resource efficiency within own operations, contributing to sustainable, efficient use and management of energy and natural resources in operations by 2030;
b) Improved sustainability of food and drink packaging, striving for all packaging towards circularity by 2030.
Sodexo commitments:
• Eliminate single-used plastic food service items in 17 countries.
Aspirational objective 5: Sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Improved resilience and competitiveness of companies operating at any point along the food value chain by 2030;
b) Quality jobs, skilled workforce, and safe and inclusive workplaces for all.
Sodexo commitments:
act sustainably for a hunger-free world:
• Impact 100 million beneficiaries;
• Engage 250,000 volunteers, including 100,000 Sodexo employees;
• Distribute 10 million meals per year;
• Collect and distribute 15 million US$;
• 100% employees with gender-balanced management;
• A lost time injury rate (LTIR) under 0.3;
• 10bn € benefiting SMEs;
• 100% cage-free shell and liquid eggs;
• Improve welfare standards of all chicken meat sourcing in the US by 2024 and Europe by 2026.
Aspirational objective 6: Sustainable value creation in the European food supply chain through partnership
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Improved resilience and competitiveness of companies operating at any point along the food value chain by 2030;
b) Continued progress towards sustainable production, contributing to sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources by 2030 and improved animal welfare.
Sodexo commitments:
• 33% Plant-based dishes on our menus;
• 100% employees trained on sustainable practices.
Aspirational objective 7: Sustainable sourcing in food supply chains
With the following aspirational targets:
a) Transformed commodity supply chains that do not contribute to deforestation, forest degradation, and destruction of natural habitat and which preserve and protect high-value ecosystems and biodiversity;
b) Improved social performance in (global) food supply chains.
Sodexo commitments:
• 100% sustainable fish & seafood;
• 100% deforestation-free supply chain by 2030 (palm oil, paper, soy, beef);
• 100% physical certified sustainable palm oil;
• 100% sustainable paper disposables;
• 99% of Sodexo-controlled coffee purchased for our retail channel responsibly sourced by the end of 2021.
