The European Commission's Communication towards a common European tourism data space (2023/C 263/01) discusses creation of the data space which will benefit various stakeholders, including business intermediaries, destination managers, and tourism service providers, by offering high-quality information from diverse sources. Public authorities will also gain from the interoperability framework, exemplified by the EU Tourism Dashboard. SMEs, which dominate the tourism sector, will find a single reference point for data availability, aiding in service improvement and innovation.

Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) will transition from a marketing focus to managing sustainable tourism offers, supported by comprehensive data from multiple sources. The data space will enable DMOs to utilize and access more information, enhancing their planning and management capabilities.

The Communication addresses challenges such as data fragmentation, interoperability, and administrative burdens. It focuses on providing searchability tools and ensuring compliance with data protection regulations. Enhanced data sharing will not only benefit the tourism sector but also contribute to sustainability efforts, support local supply chains, and improve healthcare planning for travelers.

Overall, the common European data space for tourism seeks to create a more personalized, sustainable, and innovative tourism experience, maintaining Europe's status as a premier tourism destination.
